Whats New?
THE LETTER,
Skateparks
The Tony Hawk Foundation is currently in the process of writing its
grant-application guidelines for organizations seeking donations. Please
bear in mind that we expect to receive hundreds of such requests a year. One
of the most difficult and important tasks in forming a charitable foundation
is coming up with a screening process that will enable its directors to
determine which projects deserve financial support. Please check back with
our web site (www.tonyhawkfoundation.org) over the next couple of months to
see when we have completed our grant-application guidelines.
Meanwhile, I should let you know that the foundation's board of directors
has elected to give preference to public, non-profit parks in low-income
areas in the United States -- at least initially. The board is also likely
to show preference to areas that are trying to build their first skateparks,
rather than parks hoping to refurbish or add new features. That focus could
change as the foundation grows. Also, we will give grants only to groups
that can demonstrate that the money will be put to good use. That means we
will be looking at projects that have already done a lot of the grass-roots
groundwork, such as rallying community support and creating a certified
non-profit organization. To that end, I strongly urge you to visit a few
terrific web sites that offer detailed instructions on how to get a
skatepark built in your hometown. They are:
http://www.spausa.org
A step-by-step guide to getting a skatepark built, this site features info
on initial planning, builders, insurance, safety, costs and more. It's a
non-profit organization designed to promote skateparks, so all the info is
free.
http://skatepark.org
This ambitious site "serves as a resource for everyone involved in the
process of getting a public skatepark built." It features status and contact
info for more than 100 parks currently under construction worldwide, plus
extensive lists of industry contacts, design resources, planning guides and
sample documents.
http://www.skateparkguide.com
A for-profit company that sells a highly regarded book and CD about getting
skateparks built, including such matters as organizing community support,
planning a campaign and raising money. Also offers information concerning
design, construction and other current issues.
Best of luck.
